FAQs

What does a 'Mas Band' mean?

Mas bands are 'groups' or 'troupes'.

The word mas refers to the costume aspect, to 'play mas' means to put on the costume, be part of the band's theme portrayal and have fun. The 'band' just means the group. In earlier days all bands had live music, mostly percussion, but today almost all bands have sound trucks with DJs. Some bands do still include live music during the day, but being part of 'the band' just means you're in costume. You don't need to play an instrument or learn a dance routine. You just need to have fun.

When is the deadline to sign up?

Our registration dates are as follows:

ONLINE REGISTRATION starts end of June and is open for ALL sizes, tankinis, wholepieces, and special custom orders.

AFTER 20th December custom orders are closed and costumes are sold online as Small - Medium - Large sizes ONLY Registrations for wholepieces, tankinis or special custom orders MUST be made before 20th December .

Online registration for Specific sizes and special requests closes 20th DECEMBER

AFTER 20th DECEMBER

COSTUMES SOLD ACCORDING TO AVAILABILITY AS STANDARD.

Can I buy a costume only?

No. In Trinidad costumes are sold as part of a 'Mas Band'. One thing which separates Trinidad carnival from other carnivals is in Trinidad there are more people taking part than watching. Anyone you see in costume is part of a band, and if they're in costume standing by themselves on the roadside, then they've probably got lost.

When you register for a costume you are joining the band and get a costume package, which will either be non inclusive or All Inclusive depending on the band.

ALL of Utopia Mas costume packages are 'ALL INCLUSIVE'.

What does All Inclusive mean? Most bands are All Inclusive but this will vary across from one band to another. It usually covers lunch on Monday and Tuesday, and a small breakfast on Tuesday only. Both alcoholic drinks and soft drinks are included, and water. Some bands have a limit on alcoholic drinks giving masqueraders a limited number of  'drinks chits'

With Utopia Mas, All Inclusive means you get breakfast, snacks, and lunch. All the drinks you want, including premium labels. Security, sound trucks, Monday costume and Tuesday costume. You have the option to add our all inclusive Ash Wednesday Boat ride

Breakfast is served to everyone on Tuesday. Lunch is served both days, and you also get snacks throughout the two days. Drinks are unlimited. You can go to the drinks trucks and get drinks throughout the two days as often as you like. We always overstock our bar with premium alcoholic drinks, soft drinks, juice, water, and ice. .

What's a 'Shuttle Service' ?

Some Mas bands often include a shuttle service. It should be noted this is NOT a shuttle service from your hotel to the band. It is a limited shuttle service from the departure point to the band for a limited time to help masqueraders who arrive late and need to get to the band. They will often only operate for the first hour after departure.

Utopia Mas does provide private shuttle services for masquerader groups, but these are pre-arranged and by request only. They are not included in the cost of your package. Prices vary depending on group size and location.

How do I get my costume?

Utopia Mas announce our costume distribution dates and location a month before carnival.

Costume distribution is then done during the week before carnival with specified days for each costume chapter, up to Carnival Saturday.

If you're not arriving in Trinidad until the weekend of carnival that's ok, we have a grace period where you can come and collect costumes later than your designated day.  It's a good idea to let the team know in advance just in case your flight is delayed. You can also arrange for someone to collect your costume on your behalf. IF YOU HAVE arranged before time we can accommodate you to collect your costume Carnival Sunday.

Utopia Mas will inform you of your collection dates by email Newsletter and Whats app. On the website and via social media

How Long Is The Route?

The official carnival route runs in a loop around Woodbrook and Port of Spain. Bands start in different designated points and go anti-clockwise around the route.

although each band has their own starting point, most bands will begin somewhere near the Oval cricket ground or western end of Ariapita Avenue. Travelling anti-clockwise toward Port of Spain, Downtown, Piccadilly Bridge, crossing four judging stages before making their way toward the main judging stage at the Queens Park Savannah. There are some 'short cuts' for bands who do not wish to cross all five judging stages and some bands begin their day at the main Savannah stage first.

The 'party bands' focus on the Socadrome. The Socadrome is not part of the official route and does not count as a judging stage for competition, so competition bands tend to only go there for 'Las Lap'.

The full route is not really that long, 5 miles (or 8 Kilometers), but that's chipping, wining, dancing, jumping, waving, drinking.... so it's an energetic 5 miles so it's good to get yourself fit for mas.

When Is Carnival?

Carnival changes every year because it follows the luna calendar. The Origins are associated with the decadent feasts and revelry held before the fasting of lent. The Mas tradition started in the late 18th century with French plantation owners organizing masquerades (mas) and balls before enduring the fasting of Lent. So carnival Monday and Tuesday are always the two days before Ash Wednesday. They're also known as 'mardi gras' or 'shrove Tuesday' basically the two days you fill up before fasting.

In Trinidad the carnival festivities start much earlier, with competitions for Panorama steel pan competition, Kings and Queens, Soca Monarchs etc. Fetes can begin weeks before carnival. It's all part of the build up.

The 18th century slaves could not take part in Carnival, they formed their own, parallel celebration called Canboulay, which is now a precursor to Carnival.  On Carnival sunday is Dimanche Gras,

In the early hours of carnival it all begins with Jouvert. creole for  'break of day/opening day'.

Jouvert approx. 3am - 8am

Monday mas approx. 10am - 6pm

Tuesday mas approx 7am - 6pm

Las Lap approx 6pm - 8pm.

You should plan on getting virtually no sleep between Jouvert and Las Lap. don't worry, somehow with the vibes and Adrenalin you'll find the energy!

I'm not sure of my sizes, what to do?

Our costumes are available in specified sizes as long as you register early enough and tell us your specific size, we will make it to fit you.

Otherwise costumes are made with many 'one size fits all' pieces and some in generic sizes

XS

Small

Medium

Large

XL

You can check our SIZE CHART via the link to see how our sizes match up to those your're accustom to.

Please take note of our deadlines, if you need a costume to fit specific sizes then you need to register early enough. If you delay, then you might miss the deadline and will only get generic sizes.

We also have a deadline after which costumes are sold only as what's left on the shelf.

Can I get a discount if i buy something left over last minute?

No. We only produce as many costumes as we've sold, or expect to sell. We may have some extras or uncollected costumes to re-sell last minute but out of respect for our loyal masqueraders and those paying full price we do not do reduced prices for late comers. If you come last minute you still pay full price and may not get in the band.

If you like our costumes and the Utopia vibes then you need to register early to ensure you get a costume and a place in the band.

Ask about Pre-registration. Click Here

I don't want the whole costume, can i just get a t-shirt and wrist band?

We are a competition band and prefer masqueraders as much as possible wear the full costume. We don't sell 'just a T-Shirt and Wrist band" That's not our vibe as a competitive Mas band.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes. Group discounts will vary depending on the size of your group and package type your registering for.

Send us an email with all the details and we'll confirm the discount.

Do I wear the costume both days?

No. You only wear the full costume on carnival Tuesday.

For Monday mas you wear a monday wear.

Some masqueraders go the full way with make up, hair, decorated boots etc, and some buy extra special 'monday wear' decorated bras or tiaras. there are designers and carnival stores who specialize in designing and selling 'Monday wear' for  monday only. These are purchased separately by the masquerader and not supplied by the bands.

Some bands may give you a t-shirt for monday, not all bands provide monday wear, some give nothing at all for monday.

For carnival Monday Utopia Mas provide you with a specific Monday costume which you'll get when you collect your main Tuesday costume.

For Tuesday you'll wear your full costume. we recommend you buy appropriate fitting and colour boots, you can visit either Featheration or Gould Mas Supplies here in Trinidad to decorate them to match your costume.

My friends want to play in a different Costume than me, will we be apart?

No. It doesn't matter if you're in a different chapter from your friends you can mix and mingle throughout the day. The only time you'll be separated is at the judging stages when we ask you to get into the right chapter to cross the stage for our presentation.

How much is the deposit and when do I pay my costume balance?

You pay your deposit when you register.

.

TIPS

Meeting Point. Try to reach the meeting point of the band on time. Few things will ruin your carnival more than spending all day walking around trying to find your band. Don't depend on cellphones to find the band because networks can quickly become overloaded on carnival Monday and Tuesday. Better to be safe than sorry and get to the meeting point on time.

Keep hydrated. Try to drink water throughout the day. One bottle of water for ever 5 alcohol drinks is a good way to keep hydrated.

Feet. Dr Scholls gel inserts. Remember to by boots half a size bigger to accommodate the inserts. And if you're wearing socks with a seam, wear them inside out so the seam does not rub your toes. We recommend a high calf or knee length boot with a heel between 2" and 4". If you're not a seasoned masquerader then avoid a higher heel or a flat shoe. Think about something you need to wear all day and walk a long way in. You'll want something to match your costume ( which you might decorate) so if buying new, break them in by wearing them around the house before you fly out for carnival.

Make-Up. If you want a professional MUA then book now! The best are usually pre-booked 12 months in advance.

If you’re not using a private make up artist but you’re doing your own make here’s some tips. Use a ‘Long Wear’ foundation. Get TWO shades, one for Monday and a darker for Tuesday as you’ll be tanned. Powder. Long Wear lipstick. Lip gloss. Rhinestones in three colours to match your costume. Spirit gum. Eyelash glue. Falsies. Waterproof mascara. Waterproof liquid gel liner. Glitter. Glitter adhesive. Skin prep and Facial primer. Eyeshadow primer. Blush. Bronzer/Highlighter. Setting spray.

DOs & Don'ts

Things to carry in a small tote bag. Spray Sunscreen SPF 100. Body tape. Hair pins. Safety pins. 2 pairs spare stockings. Ultra thin panty liners. Painkillers. Alcoholic wet wipes. Tissues. Lipstick. Compact. Comb. Cameraphone with portable phone charger.

Food . Bands cannot guarantee a specific time for lunch, it is very dependent on 'traffic flow' of the route as to when they reach their lunch stops, or the caterers reach the band if they serve food on the move. Even though the band is all inclusive It's a good idea to carry some money either in a pouch, or down your shoe, so you can buy something to eat on the road you need.

Avoid the temptation to drink as much alcohol as you can. Both carnival days are long, and the sun is hot. You don’t want to collapse in a heap and miss the stage.

Don't wander off by yourself. Stay with the band and as much as possible try and stay within the security team.

Don't carry unnecessary items, jewellry, money, etc...

DO listen to the security teams instructions, they're there to keep you safe.

About Us

Utopia Mas launched onto the Trinidad carnival scene in 2012. Not as a 'break-away' band like most, but one of the few modern mas bands started from scratch.

Utopia Mas was formed by Band Leader Stuart and four of his close friends, all of whom are longtime masqueraders.

Since day 1 Utopia's philosophy has always been first and foremost about three principles;

1. Providing excellent customer service

2. Our masqueraders having fun.

3. Our costumes reflecting the theme.

Utopia endeavour to provide our masqueraders with an intimate 'Utopia family' vibes. Keeping it real allows us to provide our Utopians with friendly familiar customer service, and a comfortable experience for you on the road. Especially when you want to get lunch, visit a drinks truck, or use the mobile bathroom.

The Utopia Vibes. There are 'Utopians' who have played with us every year since the beginning and each year there are new masqueraders  who jumped across to Utopia Mas from other bands. However you join us, all our "Utopians" quickly become part of the international Utopia family. Something we love about our people is how they get to know each other on the road, keep in touch, then come back to meet up again in the band the next year, Part of being in Utopia Mas is making friends for life on the road.

Who Are The Utopians, Our masqueraders come from all regions of the world, Trinidad, Tobago, Caribbean islands, Canada, USA, UK, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan, and South America. We are proud of the range in ages from young to mature, people of all races and complexions. A real mix of people united by two common factors, a love of carnival and the desire to have fun playing mas. There's no pretentiousness on the road with

Utopia Mas.

We are an ALL INCLUSIVE band and whilst there is no pretentiousness on the road we expect all our Utopian's to be respectful of their fellow masqueraders, Our security are there to keep you safe. We encourage you to free up and have fun and enjoy the great 'fun vibe' of Utopia Mas, however, our security team will ALWAYS put the comfort and safety of our masqueraders first.

Keeping it real. Utopia Mas are dedicated to providing you with excellent value for money, giving you beautiful well made costumes and dedicated customer service at a competitive price.

Our founder and Band Leader Stuart played mas for over 20 years, with Legends, Barbarossa, Poison, and Island People before forming Utopia Mas in 2012. His customer service viewpoint has always been that of a masquerader and providing what's important to you is what's important to us.. This is why Utopia Mas focus on making your road experience pleasurable, producing quality costumes with trending materials, and doing our best to keep costs down,

We  know how much school books and class fees cost students, we know how expensive flights, hotels and travel is for our international members. We know how much your heating bills are in winter, and we understand that  you save all year for your trip to Trinidad carnival. No one wants a 'cheap' costume, and we DON'T do cheap, But Utopia Mas management are masqueraders at heart, first and foremost, so we keep our quality UP and our prices competitive. Keeping mas affordable but not making cheap costumes is one of our long term goals.

Mas and the theme. Our Band Leader Stuart is the band's designer and whilst we happily admit we are a 'pretty mas' style band with bikini, feathers, and beads, the Utopia philosophy is that mas costumes should have relevance to the theme.

Let the costumes tell the story.

We love to party on the road as much as any band but we are a competition band and so we do cross the required judging stages. There are five judging stages along the route and at these stages we ask masqueraders to respect the theme presentation and require them to be in costume and their correct chapter to give the best presentation for the judges. Our DJs announce the stages and the band staff coordinate the chapters.  The rest of the route you're free to free up, mix and mingle.

Utopia Mas do not produce our costumes in China.

We produce all our costumes 'In-house' We also design and export costumes to other carnivals around the world and now have 'sections' in some bands outside of Trinidad.

Utopia Mas Members when you register for a Utopia costume package you automatically get your Utopia membership. .

SAFETY TIPS

SAFETY TIPS

SAFETY TIPS

  • Travel in groups to and from events. Plan ahead on who will be the non drinking designated driver, plan meeting times and pick up points . You can carpool by hiring a taxi (or maxi for larger crews) especially if everyone plans on drinking.

  • Consider parking options – Many fetes now advertise where parking will be available on the night of the event, Look for a designated secured car park for the event.

  • Carry only what you need – Cash and keys. Do not carry large amounts of cash. Do not walk with valuables. Ladies choose a wristlet or small pouch that you can easily hold close to your body for lipstick etc . Avoid cross body bags as straps can be cut and large handbags or large clutches can be stolen in a split second.

  • Costume jewelry only- Keep your flashy expensive brands out of fetes and off the road. make sure all your jewelry or accessories are not expensive or expensive looking .

  • Designate a meeting point if you lose your friends –  An easily found landmark or unique obvious point.  If going to toilets or a bar at an event, or a vendor on the road, Use the buddy system at all times. Never go alone when leaving your crew’s liming spot or mas band.

  • Do not wander off alone even If you need to use the bathroom.

  • Do not accept drinks from stranger or drinks that you did not bring or buy, and do not leave drinks unattended. This even applies to ice. If you did not walk with it or got served from a bartender in your cup, don't accept it.

  • Do NOT get rat arsed drunk – Sounds pretty easy to avoid but with limitless drinks and hot sun, not eating properly before drinking or miscalculating your consumption, it can happen to the most seasoned of us.  Try to make every fifth drink a bottle of water. Friends need to watch each other and cut off the drinking if one of you have had enough.

  • Never walk to your car alone –  Have a friend or group of friends accompany you to you car if you are not carpooling. Have your keys in your hand ready when approaching your vehicle.

  • Phone a friend –  If you simply have no one to walk to your car with, call someone to let them know you are on your way to find your car and keep them on the phone until you are safely in the car, doors locked and on your way home.

  • Employ  a GPS tracker on your phone and car.

  • Always let trusted friends or family know where you are going and who with. Every time.

  • When you reach home, Be observant, especially at night, when getting out of your car to park or open a gate.

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with engine running.

  • Do not leave valuables exposed in plain sight in your car.

  • Pay attention to people loitering around parking areas or traffic lights.

Visitors to Trinidad and Tobago are reminded that they should:

• Carry some form of identification on their person when attending activities.

• Only use taxis with ‘H’ being the first letter on the number plate.

• Verify the cost of transportation before taking a taxi.

• Avoid dark and lonely areas, i.e. walking through the Queen’s Park Savannah at night.

• Do not accept lifts from strangers.

• Stay within the area controlled and designated by the mas band's security teams

• Find a police officer if in need of assistance.
